Step 3: Controller Setup

This is guide shows how to successfully set up different combinations of licensed controllers with the Cronus Zen, all on one page.

Cronus Zen allows you to connect almost any official licensed controller to an Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360, PS3 & Windows PC. This page shows you how to connect standard gaming controllers for each supported console.

Controller Setup Checklist

You are now ready to connect your controller to the Cronus Zen. This page is a Quick Guide with step-by-step instructions for both wired and wireless licensed controllers.

DO NOT attempt to use any GPC Scripts or GamePacks until you have correctly setup your controller/mouse/keyboard and you are completely satisfied with how it is working. The vast majority of support requests are from users who ignore this. YOU WILL HAVE PROBLEMS!

  1. Always update to the latest versions of Zen firmware and Zen Studio.

  2. Xbox One and PS4 controllers should be unpaired from any console before pairing with Cronus Zen.

  3. Use the short 12" micro-USB cable (supplied) to connect the Cronus Zen to your console/pc.

  4. Familiarize yourself with the USB Port and Button Labels of the Cronus Zen.

  5. Xbox One, PS4 & Xbox 360 consoles require an original licensed controller to Authenticate the Cronus Zen to your console. We call this the Auth Controller - it can also be used as your main gaming controller. This is always connected to the A1 USB Port.

  6. The console must be turned on via the power button, not the controller. You should also disable any console specific power-save options (PS4 Example).

Wired Controllers

This section covers step-by-step guides for most licensed wired controllers. We recommend that you first setup your Cronus Zen with a wired controller to verify everything is working correctly. Once you're happy with your setup, you can then move on to the Wireless Controllers section of this page to learn how to easily pair your controller wirelessly to the Cronus Zen.

Wired (Non-Crossover)

Quickly setup a wired licensed controller that matches your console. If your Xbox One, PS4 or PS3 controller is wireless, you can use a USB cable.

Example: Wired Xbox One Controller w/Headset to Xbox One Console.
  1. Turn off the console.

  2. Plug in the short (12") micro-USB cable to the back of the Zen (CONSOLE USB port) and connect the other end to your console. (IMPORTANT: PS4 Pro - connect Zen to the consoles REAR USB PORT).

  3. Connect a compatible licensed controller to Zen's A1 USB port (use USB cable if wireless).

  4. Turn on the console with its power button and Cronus Zen will automatically configure itself to match the console (the RGB LEDs will light BLUE for PlayStation 4, GREEN for Xbox etc).

  5. (Optional) Your favorite wired headset can now be connected directly to the gaming controller.

  6. That's it!😄Test the controller in-game to make sure you have full functionality before attempting to use any GPC Scripts or GamePacks.

If you have a PS4 wireless adapter such as the Astro C40 or Nacon, simply connect it to the A1 USB port the same way you would a wired controller.

Wired (Crossover)

Quickly setup a wired licensed controller that is different from your console. If your Xbox One, PS4 or PS3 controller is wireless, you can use a USB cable.

Example: Wired Xbox One Controller w/Headset to PlayStation 4 Console (PS4 Pass-Thru)
  1. Turn off the console.

  2. Plug in the short (12") micro-USB cable to the back of the Zen (CONSOLE USB port) and connect the other end to your console. (PlayStation 4 Pro - connect Cronus Zen to the consoles rear USB port).

  3. Connect a compatible Auth controller that matches the console to Zen's A1 USB port (use USB cable if wireless).

  4. Turn on the console with its power button and Cronus Zen will automatically configure itself to match the console (the RGB LEDs will light BLUE for PlayStation 4, GREEN for Xbox etc).

  5. Now connect your preferred licensed controller to Zen's A3 USB port (micro-USB cable if wireless). The controller should light up and vibrate indicating that it has synced with the Cronus Zen.

This is your primary gaming controller. All outputs from the Pass-Thru Auth Controller will be blocked.

  6. (Optional) Your favorite wired headset can now be connected directly to the gaming controller.

  7. That's it!😄 Test the controller in-game to make sure you have full functionality before attempting to use any GPC Scripts or GamePacks.

If your main gaming controller does not support headset audio, Cronus Zen has a bypass feature that allows you to connect your headset directly to the Pass-Thru Auth Controller.

Wireless Controllers

An important thing to remember is that you are pairing your wireless controller to the Cronus Zen, not to the console. The following guides will show you how to easily pair your favorite controller with the Zen, either by Bluetooth or Wireless Adapter.

Connect Cronus Zen to a Windows PC (PROG USB Port) and open Zen Studio's Device Monitor.

For consistency and simplicity, each of the wireless pairing guides will assume that you are pairing to the Cronus Zen while it is connected to a Windows PC via the PROG USB Port (supplied mini-USB cable). This is also a good way of checking all of the controller inputs are being detected correctly in Zen Studio: Tools 👉Device Monitor

Zen Studio's Device Monitor - Testing PS4 Bluetooth Controller Inputs

PS4 Bluetooth Pairing

🚫Before you begin 👉 make sure your PS4 controller is unpaired from any other devices. Once that is done, turn the controller off (hold PS Buttonfor 15 secs or until the light bar turns OFF).

  1. Connect Zen to a Windows PC via the PROG USB port, using the supplied mini-USB cable, then open the latest version of Zen Studio. Go to Tools 👉Device Monitor.

  2. Put the PS4 controller into Bluetooth pairing mode by holding the SHARE and PS buttonstogether for 4 seconds or until the light bar flashes WHITE.

  3. Press Cronus Zen's Bluetooth pairing button (P2). The Zen RGB LEDs will flash BLUE when Bluetooth is in search mode. After a couple of seconds the light bar on the PlayStation 4 controller will change to solid BLUE, indicating pairing is complete👍

  4. The controller will now appear as a connected device in Zen Studio, so you are now able to test all controller inputs using Device Monitor.

  5. That's it!😄The PS4 controller is now fully paired to the Cronus Zen and you're ready to use it wirelessly with the gaming system of your choice. When connecting to a console, simply follow the Authentication rules and you'll be good to go.

Always test your controller in-game to make sure you have full functionality before attempting to use any GPC Scripts or GamePacks.

Important Notes: Headset Audio is not possible over Bluetooth. Of the official DualShock controllers, only a wired Sony DualShock 4 CUH-ZCT2 (DS4v2) can support both headset audio and the built-in DS4 speaker. The older model Sony DualShock 4 CUH-ZCT1 (DS4v1) does not support headset or built-in DS4 speaker.

However, most third-party licensed PS4 Controllers (Wired/USB only) do support headset audio - and as an added bonus, the awesome Astro C40 controller supports full Auth, Wireless and Headset Audio using its own custom wireless adapter.

As there is no headset support over Bluetooth, Cronus Zen has a bypass feature that allows you to connect your headset directly to the Pass-Thru Auth Controller (see example below).

Example: Wireless Bluetooth PS4 Controller to PlayStation 4 Console (Headset w/PS4 Pass-Thru)

  2. Connect any licensed PS3 controller to Zen's A3 USB port (mini-USB cable if wireless). The Player LEDs on the controller will light up.

  3. Disconnect the controller from the Zen, and the Player LEDs will begin to flash. After a few seconds only one Player LED will light up, indicating pairing is complete👍

  4. The controller will now appear as a connected device in Zen Studio, so you are now able to test all controller inputs using Device Monitor.

  5. That's it!😄The PS3 controller is now fully paired to the Cronus Zen and you're ready to use it wirelessly with the gaming system of your choice. When connecting to a console, simply follow the Authentication rules and you'll be good to go.

Always test your controller in-game to make sure you have full functionality before attempting to use any GPC Scripts or GamePacks.

Example: Wireless Bluetooth PS3 Controller to PlayStation 3 Console

If you reconnect and disconnect the controller USB cable a second time, the PlayStation 3 controller will no longer function wirelessly. To resolve this, simply unplug the Zen from the PS3 and start again.

  5. That's it!😄The Xbox One controller is now fully paired to the Cronus Zen and you're ready to use it wirelessly with the gaming system of your choice. When connecting to a console, simply follow the Authentication rules and you'll be good to go.

Always test your controller in-game to make sure you have full functionality before attempting to use any GPC Scripts or GamePacks.

As there is no Authentication or headset audio support over Bluetooth, Cronus Zen has a bypass feature that allows you to use your controller wirelessly by connecting a Pass-Thru Auth Controller to the A1 USB port. You can also connect a headset to this controller. connect your headset directly to the Pass-Thru Auth Controller (see example below).

If you wish to use an Xbox One controller wirelessly or have a headset connected directly to your wireless Xbox One controller without having a pass-thru auth controller connected to A1, you you can use an Xbox One Wireless Adapter instead (see guide below).

Example: Wireless Bluetooth Xbox One Controller to Xbox One Console (Headset w/XB1 Pass-Thru)

Xbox One Wireless Adapter Pairing

🚫Before you begin 👉 make sure your Xbox One controller is unpaired from any other devices. You can do this by simply connecting the controller to a Windows PC using a USB cable and wait until the Xbox Buttonchanges to solid WHITE. Once that is done, turn the controller off (hold the Xbox Buttonfor 5 secs or until the LED turns OFF).

The Xbox One Wireless Adapter🛒 is the preferred wireless method for ALL licensed wireless Xbox One controllers on an Xbox One or PS4 console.

Xbox One Bluetooth works great, however the wireless adapter does have more functionality than Bluetooth. It fully supports Auth without requiring a second controller (Bluetooth does not), includes wireless support for all models including newer bluetooth Xbox One controllers, and supports a compatible headset connected directly to the Xbox One wireless controller that you are gaming with (Bluetooth does not).

Tip: This method also works when gaming on a PC, but the controller may not re-sync if it loses power. Pressing Zen's reset button will force it to resync.

  1. Connect Zen to a Windows PC via the PROG USB port, using the supplied mini-USB cable, then open the latest version of Zen Studio. Go to Tools 👉Device Monitor.

  2. Connect the Xbox One Wireless Adapter (sold separately) to Zen's A3 USB port. Wait at least 5 seconds for it to register with Cronus Zen before connecting a controller.

  3. Connect any compatible Xbox One Wireless Controller to the A2 USB port using a USB cable. It will vibrate once indicating it has been registered successfully by Zen.

  4. Disconnect the Xbox One Controller from Zen's A2 USB port. The Xbox Buttonwill begin to flash.

  5. Within a few seconds the Xbox Buttonwill stay solid WHITE indicating pairing is complete👍

  6. That's it!😄The Xbox One controller is now fully paired to the Cronus Zen and you're ready to use it wirelessly with the gaming system of your choice. When connecting to a console, simply follow the Authentication rules and you'll be good to go.

Bonus: A headset can now be connected directly to the Xbox One controller and it will work 100% without being tethered to another auth controller. This will also work even if you are connected to a PS4! Yes, an Xbox One headset, including chat support, with a wireless Xbox One controller....on a PS4 Console🔥

You should only have to run this pairing procedure once. As soon as the initial process is complete, all you need to do in future is simply connect the wireless adapter to Zen's A3 USB port and turn on your controller. It will sync in a matter of seconds and you're good to go!

As soon as the The Cronus Zen pairs successfully with your controller, it will appear as a connected device in Zen Studio and you can test the controller inputs using Device Monitor. Always test your controller in-game to make sure you have full functionality before attempting to use any GPC Scripts or GamePacks.

Note: If you ever lose connection with your controller (this can happen if the controller timeouts or loses power for any reason), simply hit the reset button on the bottom of the Zen, or unplug the Zen from the console and reconnect to refresh Authentication.

Example: Wireless Xbox One Controller w/Headset to Xbox One Console (w/Wireless Adapter)

Important Note: The pairing between Zen and your controller will be lost if....

👉 You connect the controller to a console directly either by USB or Wireless Adapter 👉 You pair the controller via Bluetooth to a PC or Zen 👉 You connect the controller to Zen's A1 USB and then connect Zen to an Xbox One 👉 You perform a factory reset of the Cronus Zen in Zen Studio

If your controller is unable to sync to the wireless adapter, or disconnects at random intervals, there is a good chance that the adapter is faulty or not compatible and should be replaced.
