Will Physical PS4 Game Discs Play on the PS5?

Yes, physical PS4 game discs will play on PS5*. You'll be able to insert physical PS4 game discs into the PS5 and play them, as well as download digital software you've purchased from the PlayStation Store. Note that you won't be able to use physical game discs on the PS5 Digital Edition as it doesn't have a disc drive.
Before purchasing add-ons to play with your PS4 games on PS5 consoles, please try to boot and play your PS4 games on your PS5 first to see if you are happy with the play experience.
*There is at least one exception that we know of where the physical PS4 disc will not boot on a PlayStation 5, and that is Fortnite.

Will PS4 Games Purchased from the PS Store Work on PS5?

The PS5 is backwards compatible with PS4 software, so this means both physical and digital software will work on the next-gen system. Assuming you’re using the same PSN account on PS5, you will have access to all of your PS4 purchases from the PlayStation Store. This includes PlayStation Plus titles – but you will have to ensure your subscription is active in order to play these.

Will PS4 Games Play Better on the PS5?

PS4 games will play better on PS5 through the use of a "boost" mode, however this may cause compatibility issues and may not apply to every single game. You also might need to ensure that your PS4 games are installed to the PS5's SSD, although you will have the option to save space by using a more traditional external HDD. Any games stored on the latter, of course, will not benefit from the speeds of Sony's super-fast SSD.
Here's what Sony has to say about PS4 games running better on PS5:
"We’re expecting backward compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions. We’re currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers."

Will PSVR Games Work on PS5?

Sony has said that PlayStation VR will be fully backwards compatible with the PS5, meaning that you’ll be able to plug your current headset into the next-gen console and experience virtual reality. As the PlayStation 5 is also backwards compatible with PS4 software, this means that you’ll be able to play PSVR games on the PS5 – regardless of whether you own them digitally or physically.
For the best PS VR experience on PS5 we recommend using a DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller. Select games may require the PlayStation Move motion controllers or be compatible with the PlayStation VR aim controller.
You will need a special Camera adapter in order to connect your existing PS4 Camera* to the PS5, as the new PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with PSVR.

How to Get a FREE PS5 PlayStation Camera Adaptor for PSVR !
If you want to get your hands on a PS5 PlayStation Camera adaptor for free, you'll need to order one via Sony. That is done through an official PlayStation support page which you can access through
this link.
You will need to enter the serial number associated with your PSVR. This can be found on the rear side of the headset's Processor Unit and does not include any dashes or spaces. After that, you will need to fill in your personal and shipping details so that Sony knows where to send the FREE PlayStation Camera adaptor for use with PSVR on PS5!

Will the PS5 Play PS3, PS2, or PS1 Games?

PS5 is not backwards compatible with PS3 games, although it is backwards compatible with PS4 games, meaning some remasters are playable on PlayStation 5. Some high-profile examples of PS3 to PS4 remasters you'll be able to play on PS5 include The Last of Us Remastered and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. It's worth noting that PS3 Blu-ray discs and PS3 PS Store purchases will not be compatible with the PS5, however.
Some PS2 games that were ported to the PS4 will be playable on PS5. This includes essentials such as Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. However, you'll need to have purchased the PS4 versions to be able to play them on PS5. The PS5 cannot play PS2 DVDs and any PS2 Classics you may have purchased on the PS3 will not be compatible either.
PS5 is not backwards compatible with PS1 games. This includes PS1 game discs and PS1 Classics that you may have purchased on PS3 or PSP in the past. There are a few PS4 remasters like PaRappa the Rapper and MediEvil that you'll be able to play on PS5, as well as Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited Trilogy.
